Insurance Binder

I can’t imagine the stress of being in a situation that would require using insurance to replace belongings, but I’m pretty sure that one of the last thing I would want to do during such a time would be to hunt for documentation and proof of what we had. That is the main reason I wanted to create an insurance binder (part of my resolution for 2013).

There are actually two copies of this binder. Currently they are both in our house (living in the cupboard with our Manual and Warranty Binder) but the intention is to give a copy to my parents. I’m no mathematician but given that we live in the prairies and they live on the East Coast, the chances of both binders being destroyed at the same time must be pretty small.

The first thing in the binder is a copy of our policy. I know the insurance company keeps it on file but I wanted everything together.

I organized my binder by rooms/areas. I figured a picture is worth a thousand words, so that’s mostly what I used. I photographed everything: the room from a distance, all the furniture, close ups of closets and inside drawers, etc. I then used a word document to put them all on a few pages per area and printed it out.

Along with the pictures, I wanted to include some information on our larger and/or more expensive purchases. For those, I got J to write down the name of the item and the serial number.

As I work through my house following my resolution (Feb/March space coming soon) I plan to complete each room. That way by the end of the year I will have an up-to-date record of all our belongings.

Sticker Organization

As you know, I have been working on my office/craft room for quite a while. It’s almost done (or at least as done as it’s going to get for the time being) and I’ll show you the whole thing soon. In the meantime, I thought I’d show you my very non-fancy sticker organization.

Step 1: Sort stickers into categories. I used ones such as birthdays, school, and camping/travel. I think I have about 12 categories in total, which is enough to stay organized but not too many for me to keep straight.

Step 2: Label large freezer bags with the categories and place the stickers inside the bags. Some of the larger sheets I cut down to make them fit. I do have two sheets that are too long for the bags so I just leave their bags open.

Step 3: Place inside a scrapbook paper holder. I use these for most of my craft storage (as you’ll see soon) and I love them!

On a side note, if you were to go in the room a week ago, this is what you would have seen. Pretty, right? These are all the tubs that used to be in my classroom, along with the stash of school supplies I kept in the basement. J and D helped me bring everything upstairs and into the office so I can finally have everything organized and in one place. Believe it or not, I’m down to one tub left to unpack and put away.

D's Daily To Do List

I have a confession; I can be a bit of a nag. According to D, I don’t even know how good I am at it. Do you think that’s a compliment? I’m not sure. Anyway, I thought that if I nagged him enough to brush his teeth, eat breakfast, and all that stuff that 13-year-old boys tend to forget, he’d eventually remember without my prompting. It’s been over four months since he moved in and I’m starting to feel like a broken record.

In order to save my sanity, I decided to make this sheet for D. It includes all the things he needs to do at various times of the day. Some things don’t need to be done every single day but I included them anyway.

Here's the step by step:

Step 1: Go to and choose Create A Collage. On the left hand side, choose layouts (the second option), cards, and then change the size to 5 x 7. Click save and call it whatever you want.

Step 2: Go back to and choose Edit a Photo. It will prompt you to open a file. Select the blank one you just saved. 

Step 3: From the lefthand side select the font option (the P). Next pick the font you like and type your list.

Step 4: From the lefthand side select the textures option (second from the bottom). I picked the paint option and played around with the options.

Step 5: Save your work, print it out, and frame it. 

D has been using a dry-erase marker to cross things off as they are finished. It's been two days so far and it seems to be working. No more nagging... at least not about the things on the list.

Mrs. Nickerson's Fudge

As far as I can remember, this is the first recipe that I actually asked someone for. The woman’s name was Mrs. Nickerson and she lived across the street. I have no idea how I came to try her fudge but it was delicious. We moved from that street when I was 14 (17 years ago… I feel old) and I have no idea whatever happened to her but I think of her whenever I make it.

To start, you want to have everything measured, prepped, and ready to go. This recipe is quick and easy but requires you to move quickly through the process. Don’t be intimidated. I just want you to be prepared.


1 2/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup milk (I use skim or 2%, whichever we happen to have)
2 tablespoons butter (I used to use margarine and it worked fine too)

2 cups mini marshmallows
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla (I never actually measure it)

Cooking spray (I use Pam baking spray)


Step 1: Spray a glass pan and set it to the side. The pan I use is 9 x 13 and makes fairly thin fudge.

Step 2: In a large pot combine the first three ingredients: sugar, milk and butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat for five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Stir in the next three ingredients: marshmallows, chocolate chips, vanilla. You’ll need to stir quickly to make it all melt. If your mixture gets a little too hard to stir, you can put it back on the heat for a couple seconds.

Step 4: Pour the fudge into the glass pan and place in the fridge. Cool, cut, and serve. You can also freeze the fudge.

Easter Recap

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
