Grandma's Icing and Big Changes

Big changes have been happening here. As of last night, I am a full-time stepmom. Yep, the kids moved in with us. We’re not sure how long they’ll be here or what’s going to happen in the future but we’re going to enjoy it for as long as it lasts. In order to make the first night after the big move special, I decided to make them a cake, based on this Modern Art Cake from While mine doesn't look professional at all, I'm really happy with how it turned out.

The cake itself wasn’t anything special. It was a confetti cake made from a box. The special part is the icing. I used my grandma’s homemade icing recipe, which is always delicious.

1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar (not icing sugar)
6 tbsp. flour
3 tbsp. milk
3 tbsp. hot water

Blend butter and sugar together. Gradually add the other ingredients until smooth.

If you want to make chocolate icing, you simply double your milk and hot water and add 6 tbsp. of cocoa powder.

To decorate it, I used four different colours of icing.

Step 1: Put about 2 teaspoons in a bag and then add food colouring to get the desired colour. I used gel for some colours and liquid for some but definitely preferred the colour from the gel.

Step 2: Microwave one bag for about 6 seconds (or until the melted enough to pour but not too much so it melts the bag), cut off a corner, and then drizzle it over the cake.

Steps 3 - 5: Repeat with the other colours of icings.

The only things I would change in the future are to cut smaller holes in the corner of the bags and to put the cake in the fridge for a couple minutes in between each colour of icing. My colours ran a little bit.

Along with cake, we had a little present for each of them. We gave them each a lanyard with their bus pass and their own house key. It’s not much but hopefully it makes them feel more like this is their permanent home for however long they're here.

So those are the big changes happening around here. If you have any advice for a new full-time stepmom, I’d be happy to hear it!
